6. Totem

This work is focused on idiosyncratic moments of human nature, and it communicates a universal quality at its most basic level. This sculpture is a fabricated steel piece representing an amalgamation of bone and soft tissue forms. The patina emphasizes natural decay of rusting steel. 7. Hoodoos
Joan Benefiel / Brooklyn, NY
The artist is best known for her expertise in both traditional and cutting-edge sculpture materials and techniques. Since she began piercing forms, Benefiel has been seeking ways to break up opacity and bring in the light to her elongated figures. Increasingly interested in maximizing the interplay of color and shadow, the artist began experimenting with translucent resin. By combining the resin with COR-TEN steel, her public artworks glisten in the light while secured on a base of a naturally eroding steel surface. Inspired by nature’s dramatic geological wonders of the same name, this modern medium makes Hoodoos a vibrant contemporary work.
