Dye Academy Intro to Disc Dyeing
The Peoria Art Guild is hosting the Dye Academy during the international 2024 Ledgestone Open disc golf tournament. The Dye Academy brings together some of the best disc dyeing and painting artists to offer a FREE 2-hour workshop on various techniques to current Peoria Art Guild members. (This free event is for Current Peoria Art Guild Members Only.)
The introduction to disc dyeing class will demonstrate a variety of different styles/methods of disc dyeing, the materials and equipment needed for each method, and allow students to dye a disc using the method of their choice. The first hour of class will focus on demonstrating the different dyeing methods and the second hour is for students to dye their discs.
Below is a brief description of what the class will cover
1. Equipment and Materials - A short overview of all the different gear we utilize for different styles of disc dyeing including disc plastic types, vinyl cutters, dye types, vinyl, turntables, heat lamps, hot plates, tweezers, droppers etc.
2. Glue Beds - This style of dye is most similar to hydrodipping in that you make a design with dye on the surface of the glue and transfer that design onto the disc. You use a dropper to apply dye mixed with acetone to the surface of the glue where it spreads and reacts in interesting ways. You then manipulate the dye on the surface of the glue using a skewer, straw, etc to produce interesting patterns and apply the disc upside down on top of the glue/dye and let it sit for 24-72 depending on a variety of factors (plastic type, dye, etc).
3. Floetrol Beds - This method uses techniques from acrylic paint pouring to create abstract patterns and “cells” on a disc. We will demonstrate a variety of different pouring techniques including open Cup pours, split cup pours, swipes, dutch pours, and chameleon cells.
4. Stencils and Hot Dips - Stencils use a vinyl cutter to cut a pattern into a sheet of vinyl which is applied to the disc and then portions of the vinyl are removed and dyed separately to create complex multicolor dyes. Hot dips involve floating a disc on top of hot water mixed with dye and is excellent for creating uniform color.
5. Spin Dyes - Spin Dyes use a turntable to spin a disc and then use a paint brush or q-tip with dye that is mixed with acetone or denatured alcohol to apply dye while the disc is spinning. This can create uniform rings, offset circles or even complex lollipop patterns.
6. Shaving Cream - This method involves applying powdered dye to a mound of shaving cream and then apply the disc on top of the mound and push down/let gravity allow the disc to sink in to the shaving cream and it creates a sense of motion as the dye slowly moves across the disc while dyeing.
7. Hand Painting - We will not be demonstrating this technique in class but will discuss how the different dyes and methods can be used in combination with hand painting to create some truly unique effects.
Space is limited, pre-registration is required.
