Black Barber Shop… A Gathering Place of Pride and Dignity - Dr. Elsburgh Clarke

  Many years ago, and even to this day, Black Barber shops were the meeting place where black gentlemen would go, not only to get a haircut but to discuss national local and sports news events. Upon entering the shop, you would sit down, and pick up on the various ongoing conversations while the barber was clipping and cutting hair for the latest style. The Black barber shops were the “social media” of the times.

     Peoria continues to hold that tradition with Black Barber and Beauty Shops. These photographs shown in the gallery will highlight images of a long and honored profession that remains an integral part of our community.
