While Douglas and Smelser approach their images differently, they have some thought processes in common. The work of both artists shares an abstract sensibility that is fueled by referencing the natural world, as well as symbols and systems of how to view that natural world. Also, both artists are currently examining pattern and how it can function toward their goals. Both artists work make reference to the body and cycles in nature.
